TREKKING IN KUMAON HIMALAYAS

Immortalized by the legends of Jim Corbett, Kumaon lies in the Himalayan belt west of Nepal. The districts of Almora, Pithoragarh and Ranikhet are a treasure house for botanists and iconologists. Dotted with tiny villages and temples, forests of pine, rhododendron, oak, cedar and cypress provide a haven for trekkers. The central Himalayan range stretches overhead from Mt Kailash to Mt Api in Nepal. West of Almora, at an altitude of 1938m, is Nainital. Set around the shores of a willow-fringed deep blue lake, with tiny villages perched on mountain sides, it is a charming hill station full of orchards. Trekking excursions to Bhimtal, Khurpatal and Binayak are an exercise in tranquility. Kausani, a tiny resort 51 kms from Almora, inspired Mahatma Gandhi to pen his memorable commentary on the Gita.
